1. The magnet test

Hold a strong magnet (a fridge magnet works; a neodymium magnet is better) against the piece. Silver is not magnetic. If the piece snaps firmly onto the magnet, it's built on a steel or iron core — walk away.

The catch: plenty of fakes use non-magnetic metals too (copper, brass, zinc alloys), so passing this test doesn't prove it's silver. It only rules out the worst offenders. Think of it as a filter, not a verdict.

2. The hallmark check

Look for a tiny stamp in a hidden spot — inside a ring band, near a chain's clasp, on the back of a pendant. Common marks:

  • 925, S925, or Sterling — sterling silver, 92.5% pure. The standard for jewelry.
  • 999 — fine silver, essentially pure. Softer, less common in jewelry.
  • 800 — European silver, 80% pure, mostly on antiques.

The catch: a stamp is a claim, not a guarantee — counterfeiters can stamp "925" on plated brass. A missing stamp isn't automatic proof of fake either (some handmade and antique pieces are unmarked). Use the hallmark together with the physical tests.

3. The ice test

Lay the piece flat and set a small ice cube directly on it. Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any metal — it pulls heat into the ice so fast that the cube starts melting on contact, noticeably faster than it would on steel, glass, or plated alloys. Flatware, bars, and wide rings show this best.

4. The sound test

Gently tap the piece with a fingernail or a coin. Real silver rings with a clear, high-pitched chime that lingers; most base-metal fakes give a short, dull thud. This one takes a calibrated ear — try it on a piece you know is real first.

5. The white-cloth test

Rub the piece briskly with a soft white cloth. If faint black or dark-gray residue comes off, that's silver oxide — and a good sign. Which brings us to the point almost everyone gets backwards:

If real money is on the line — an antique, an heirloom, a big purchase — a jeweler can run an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) scan or an acid test. XRF reads the exact metal composition in seconds without damaging the piece, and most jewelers charge little or nothing for it.

Skip the DIY acid kits: they work, but they permanently mark the piece and handle corrosive chemicals — not worth it for jewelry you love.
